How do you teach unorganized sales people to become organized?

As the father of five kids, I can appreciate how difficult this can be. I have come to believe that the best way to do this with salespeople is to have a system that the entire company uses. This system requires the salesperson to maintain files, both hardcopy and electronic, to capture certain customer information, to retain certain documents, etc.

By setting up a system that everyone uses, you then can expect each salesperson to use that system. Since there is a specific way to do something, and a specific set of tools to use, that makes it easier to enforce.

Organizations should develop a method and the tools to do the following things:

  1. a hardcopy file system for each person's accounts
  2. a hardcopy file system for product literature.
  3. an electronic file system for each person's accounts
  4. a monthly plan - either hardcopy or electronic
  5. a schedule - kept 3 - 6 weeks in advance.
These are the minimum requirements. Your organization may add several other pieces to this.

Instead of asking an unorganized sales person to become organized, you create the organization system for them, and then expect that everyone will use it. You'll get much better results this way.
