Introduction:

Focus the discipline of allocating mental time to the process and to the process alone.  It is one of the constant keys to effective thinking. When you focus, you “give your sole attention to one issue — pay particular attention to…”  In other words, you ignore everything around it and concentrate on one issue.

Think of taking a picture with a camera on your phone.  You direct the camera to an object or a person and then ignore everything else to home in on the object.  In Menta-Morphosis, you do the same thing, only with your mind, not your camera.

Used for:

Focusing is one of the disciplines that allow you to think effectively.  In every step of every process, the degree to which you can focus will have a major impact on the successful completion of that step.  So, strive to focus as completely as possible.

Benefits

The 20th century educator, John Dewey, summed it up:“When a person is absorbed, the subject carries him on.  Questions occur to him spontaneously; a flood of suggestions pour in on him; further inquiries and reading are indicated and followed.”      John Dewey

How to

1,  Dedicate sufficient, scheduled time to the thinking project. Your time should be blocked off and devoted exclusively to the thinking project.

2. Don’t be overly hungry or sleep deprived. It is OK to be a little hungry – as in skipping a   meal before the thinking session – as this sharpens our senses. However, if you fast for two or three days, that’s probably too much.  Your mind will be obsessed with food.

3.  Eliminate potential distractions. Remove cell phones, close open doors, etc. “There is  no greater enemy of effective thinking than divided interest.” — John Dewey

  1. Prepare to write it down. If you are in a team or group, you may want to have your whiteboard, poster paper, computer projector, and screen, etc. Get whatever you need to write down the ideas ready before you begin so you don’t have to think about it later – one less thing to distract you.

.     5. Immerse yourself into the project. Do nothing else during the time that you have set    aside for this project. Let the thinking project be the only thing that occupies our mind.

  1. Capture distracting thoughts. When you recognize a distracting thought, whether it is from you or someone on the Menta-Morphosis team, write it down, and file it in a “to be dealt with later” place. That will allow you to get it out of your head with minimum time and effort. Your mind will let the thought go, as you know that you have captured it for future reference.

7.  Write down the results. He’s another place for you to exercise the key fundamental    tactic: Write it down.
